The National Congressional Medal of Honor Society annual convention was held in Green
Bay, Wisconsin in
September 2007. The society is made up of Congressional Medal of Honor
recipients. Currently there are 110 living recipients of this highest
military honor - awarded for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the
call of duty.
The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation, along with
Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Kenneth Stumpf of Appleton,
spearheaded the effort to bring the convention to Northeast Wisconsin.
Several key government and business leaders also committed their support
in helping to influence the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to select
Green Bay. A special thanks goes out to Governor Jim Doyle, Green Bay
Mayor Jim Schmitt, Ashwaubenon Village President Nubs DeCleene and village
trustees, Congressman Mark Green, Packers President Bob Harlan, local
police and fire departments, and many others. This is truly an honor not only for the Greater Green Bay
area but also for the entire state of Wisconsin, said Doug
LaViolette, Medal of Honor Committee organizer. The Medal of Honor
convention has never been to Wisconsin and we want to make sure every
community can be a part of this patriotic event.
In addition to the rare opportunity of bringing together such a
notable group of veterans, the convention also featured the National
Patriots Award Dinner. The Patriots Dinner recognizes a national figure
for their patriotic devotion and service to our country in an effort to
keep America strong. Past winners have included former Presidents, cabinet
members and influential members of the business community.
